The media is making this out to be some kind of history making/shocking upset. Detroit had the lowest ERA in all of MLB. I can't see how anyone could be utterly surprised. After Detroit beat Mussina, I certainly thought the series was theirs for the taking. An injured plus over-the-hill Big Unit and Jarret I no longer have a fastball Wright shouldn't scare anyone.

Steinbrenner doesn't pick the players anymore, he just signs the paychecks. And Cashman has made some really dumb decisions with that money, especially on the pitching staff.

I heard that in the last 5 years the Cowboys have paid in salaries and luxury taxes in excess of 1.3 BILLION dollars and no World Series wins. Steinbrenner ain't getting any younger. I used to think Torre was a decent enough manager but he sucked in St Louis and even with the resources he has now he still can't win. Boo fucking hoo

I wouldn't call Bobby Abreu a mistake, its Torres fault. This is a no brainer. A - Rod made way too many mistakes to still be left in the game. Lou will come in and win the division next year, he'll know what to do with that talent. They drop A Rod for sure, get something for him while you can.

Uhm ... despite all his much documented struggles, A-Rod still had the best offensive season of any Yankee unless you place inordinate value on batting average (at which point you could make a case for Jeter, but Rodriguez had many more RBI and almost the same number of runs). Plus remember that he's playing out of position. Getting rid of him when you're actually paying him less than Giambi, Mussina, Jeter, etc (because Texas is paying part of the contract) would be incredibly dumb,

And no, Abreu wasn't a mistake. He's a perfect fit in that lineup, he just didn't have a great series. Jaret Wright, Ron Villone, Kyle Farnsworth, Shawn Chacon, Cory Lidle, Aaron Small, Sidney Ponson, Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown, and Al Leiter were some of the many mistakes. They horribly mismanaged that pitching staff, including trading away Javier Vazquez and Jose Contreras.
