Fred - go find Highland Oatmeal Porter. Similar, and very local to you (stouts are in the porter style). Also, French Broad Brewing Co. is another local craft brewer with a wide array of beer. I like to support local craft breweries, and fresh beer's always good (FWIW, Miller's brewed in Eden for this region, so there's not an issue here if you drink Miller).

Probably less likely to be found but still local is Duck-Rabbit (see my avatar for the last few months), they make a good porter and it's funky, but once you get used to it, the milk stout is good. If you have a Fresh Market or World Market around, try Young's Double Chocolate Stout. Very tasty.

Highland makes a nice, wide array of beers. A lot of people stop at cheap cold domestic light beer and I'm not knocking it. But there's so much out there to taste and try that might suit you better. Anybody that might want to try something different might enjoy a pale ale or India Pale Ale, it's a little lighter and a fair bit more flavorful than the light Pilsner you're probably drinking now. Sierra Nevada is a good one that's nationally available, but most IPAs are about the same so getting a different one won't be a big deal. Over the summer is a great time to try a wheat beer - German (hefeweissen) or Belgian (witbier - like Hoegaarden, or if you're cheaper, Blue Moon). I always suggest to women to try a Belgian Wit, it's usually enjoyed.

Barley's in Asheville has a nice selection too. I've been drinking light beer till NZ then I found a strong dark beer I liked but forgot the damn name of it. In the process of finding it, I'm switched to a dark-man.

Last time Muff was here, she bought a 6 pack of some Danish light beer and it was pretty good too. :)
