Worst of the five movies nominated for best picture. It's easy to despise racism when you use the most heinous possible examples and present them as if they are the norm. The themes were way overblown and there were too many "name" actors in this movie for any of them to have the time to develop a good character. Sometimes an ensemble cast doesn't really work.
Bad - Ryan Phillipe, Sandra Bullock
Good - Matt Dillon (and if you know me, that's hard for me to admit), and Thandie Newton

oddly, (coincidentally) I watched this last nite. Good, but didn't floor me.
Several scenes/character lines intrigued and even moved me. Others...eh. Brandon Frazer and Sandra Bullock's characters could have been left out altogether. IMHFO.

Reactions seem to be tied to your expectations. Everyone who saw it after the awards or after hearing the hype machine, thought it was overrated.

Somehow, it flew below my radar until I picked it up at Blockbuster on a lark. With zero expectations, I thought it was a pretty good movie. Better than I expected for a rental I hadnt heard about.

It struck me the same as Grand Canyon or Dances with Wolves.

Dances with Wolves beat Goodfellas for best picture.

Entertaining, but kinda like a freshamn level sociology class.
